About OpenSEO News

OpenSEO News tracks Google algorithm updates. It is run by the team behind OpenSEO, the open-source SEO suite, and is independent of Google.

Where the information comes from

Confirmed updates, with their start and end dates, come from Google’s own Search Status Dashboard. We add Google’s announcements, reporting from the SEO trade press and discussion in SEO communities. Every post lists and links the sources it draws on.

How posts are written

Posts are drafted automatically by an AI model from those sources, as original summaries with attributed claims and short quotes only. Posts about confirmed updates are published as soon as Google confirms them. Reports of unconfirmed turbulence are published only when several independent outlets report them, and are reviewed by a person otherwise. If you spot a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.

The volatility index

Once a day we check the Google top 10 for a fixed panel of keywords and measure how much it changed since the day before. How the index is worked out.

Our crawler: openseo-news-bot

Our crawler identifies itself as openseo-news-bot/1.0 (+https://news.openseo.gg/about). It reads public RSS feeds and, for a handful of articles a day, the article page. It respects robots.txt, including crawl-delay and rules for AI agents, and never polls a feed more than every 15 minutes. To ask us to stop, block the user agent in robots.txt.
